Responsibilities of pcbu's and workers
While PCBUs provide you with valuble opportunities to gain experience in your profession, it is important to understand that they have responsibilities towards you and that you have responsibilities towards them. This is also known as 'duty of care'.
While in the workplace, the PCBU is responsible for:
- establishing policies and procedures, in line with goverment leglistation, that detail how the organisation will handle the health, safety and security of their workers.
- ensuring thast the workplace is sfae. All due care must be taken to ensure that hazrads are minimised and controlled. These could include such issues as:
blocked passgeways and exits
faulty electrical wiring
moise and kighting levels
- providing adequate chemical storage facilities.
- providing safe work areas, machinery and equipment. Wok areas, machinery and equipment must be maintained at all times. Regular checks should be done to ensure saftey standards are met.
- providing information, instruction, training and supervision. Training and instruction should be given when:
new staff memebrs start work - initroducing them to the WHS policies and procedures as well as teaching them
how to use any equipment safely. This would normally be done during their initial staff induction
new procedures are implemented
new equipment or machinery is installed
alterations or upgrades are made to existing procedures or equipment.
